Greek mythology tells us about a beautiful garden belonging to the goddess Hera in a far western corner of the world, perhaps in the mountains of Arcadia, or in the Atlas mountain range in Morocco. This garden had a tree of golden apples that, according to the legend, gave whoever ate them immortality. This was the Garden of the Hesperides.
Hesperides is the name of the Nymphs of the Evening. With the help of Ladon, a hundred-headed dragon, the Hesperides looked after this sacred garden. As they tend to their duty, the Hesperides sing in unison and the fountains of ambrosia spring forth, the food and drink of the gods.
And this is how Lladro sculptors have depicted the three nymphs, accompanying their song with rhythmic movements. Made in matte porcelain, the paleness of the skin and the absence of any decoration on the faces reinforces the delicateness of the nymphs, mythological beings which legend depicted as beautiful young women.
Contrasting with the pale skin, their tunics are decorated with the color of the night. In these tunics, the reflections of the luster enhances their beauty and symbolizes the sparkles of the last rays of sun before giving way to the darkness of the night.
