Though this Madonna is a free interpretation by the artist, it is in a way reminiscent of 15th century Flemish art. The shawl and tunic fall heavily and the folds are always angular, even geometrical, a characteristic feature of many works by artists such as Van Eyck, Van der Weyden and other painters of that time.
The long loose flowing hair is also common in representations of this kind, though not so much the headdress which is more usually associated with domestic or courtly scenes. The fact that the she is holding a dove in her hand is also highly atypical in depictions of the Madonna, obviously making allusion to the Holy Spirit.
